Container is the important thing if you are going for terrace gardening or container gardening. Container gardening is getting importance in these days as most of the people don’t have land or front yard or backyard for growing plants. Container gardening is like a boon to those who can utilize the terrace, balcony, patio or empty spaces.

Number of containers with various designs and material are available. However selection of a proper container so important in ghttp://www.mydreamgarden.inardening in order to get good growth and yield of the plant.

Well..coming to the point, One common doubt in most of people is how to select container and what is the ideal characteristics of container??

Here is the answer..!!

These are the characteristics of ideal container

1.Should have equal dimension at the top and bottom.

2.Should provide good area for root expansion.

3.Should provide good aeration to the roots.

4.Should have good drainage system so that excess water will drain out.

5.Should balance with the plant body mass in order to avoid falling of the plant during heavy rain or wind.

6.Should hold the potting mix and only has to allow the excess water

What should be the depth and diameter?

Depth and diameter varies according to type of vegetable.

Why its important- Because most of the vegetables have feeder roots which absorbs the nutrients for the plant. As the depth and diameter of the container increases more area for nutrient absorption will happens and thus more yield you can get.

I.e..

1.Leafy greens – Minimum 6 inch depth

2.Fruit vegetables –Minimum 12 inch depth

3.Creeper vegetables – Minimum 20 -22 inch depth is ideal

Bonus point: Choosing a container with inbuilt stand or placing the container over a stand/ raised platform will help in these things

1.It will be easy to maintain

2.The floor will be clean

3.Helps with quick evaporation of excess water on the floor

4.You can avoid seepage issues

5.Makes the gardening physical gardening activities easier especially to those who are suffering from back pain.
